Accounts and creature syncing

Hey all, Whatstaz here.

After weeks of working and testing, I can finally say that Monsterbrew has accounts, and with it, you can sync your creatures across devices, rather than them living in a single browser.

Signing in

For the first iteration, we only support signing in via Discord. So no password to forget or email to verify.

Everything is handled via Discord. On your first sign in, you will be asked to authorize Monsterbrew. The only information we use is your email, username and profile picture. We don't care or need to know the rest of your info.

Accounts are of course entirely optional. The editor, your library and every export work exactly as they did before without one.

Syncing creatures

You can now enable syncing per creature, allowing you to view or edit them on multiple devices and browsers.

Synced creatures get a small cloud badge on their tile. Sign in on another device and they sync on their own, so you can start a creature on your laptop and finish it on the couch.

What syncing a creature does

Under the hood, syncing a creature creates a copy of it on the Monsterbrew server, which acts as a backup. It works on a last-write-wins basis, so if you edit a creature on both mobile and desktop, make sure you have the latest version pulled in. A local copy stays available for all your creatures.

Twenty sync slots

We decided to start with 20 sync slots, as we're still figuring out how this will work. Your account page shows how many you have used, next to how much storage your browser is giving Monsterbrew.

Still local first

None of this changes where your creatures actually live. They are stored in your browser first, they still work offline, and signing out leaves your library exactly where it is.

Honest limits

For the first version, syncing covers creatures only. Magic items and collections will be supported in the future, and artwork won't sync just yet.

Discord is the only way in at the moment. If that is a problem for you, come tell me in the Discord and we can work something out.
