Combat tracker turns, rolls and a combat log

Hey all.

Last week the first version of encounters and the combat tracker was released. It was still a bit bare bones, but that changes with this release! Turn tracking, conditions and temporary HP have been added. Along with these new features, I also redesigned the combat tracker to have 2 modes. More on that in a bit. Thanks to everyone who shared feedback!

The tracker is still in beta, so feedback and suggestions are much appreciated.

A new layout

The tracker now has an initiative rail with everyone in order, it highlights who's turn it is, and depending who it is, it will display different things:

  • A creature's turn: its actions up front, with legendary actions and per-day uses (based on the statblock wording), your party as targets with their AC, HP and conditions.
  • A player's turn: the creatures they're fighting, with their AC and HP, so you can answer "does a 15 hit?" without digging.

Groups with shared initiative take one turn, with a row for each copy.

Turns and rounds

You can hit Next and Previous to move through the turns, the round counter will go up on its own. Creatures at 0 HP are skipped. When the fight is over, end combat clears everything and takes you back to the encounter.

Conditions and temporary HP

Add a condition to any combatant: the 15 SRD conditions, plus Concentrating. Hover a condition for a short reminder of what it does. Each copy in a group keeps its own.

Temporary HP works the way it should: damage takes it off first.

Roll from the statblock

To-hit bonuses, damage, dice and saving throws in the tracker's statblock are now buttons. Click one and it rolls, labeled with who rolled what, like "Aboleth · Tentacle". Damage buttons are colored by damage type.

On a player's turn, you can also roll a group saving throw. Pick the creatures caught in the spell, set the save, DC and damage, and roll. Every creature rolls its own save, and resistances, immunities and vulnerabilities are taken into account. Check the results, then apply them all at once.

Combat log

Every hit, heal, condition, turn and roll is written to a combat log, grouped by round. You can add notes to it too. Made a mistake? Undo steps back through the last changes.

Add a creature mid-fight

Reinforcements! If you feel that the fight is getting to easy, add a creature while combat runs, it rolls initiative and joins in.

Keyboard shortcuts

One of my goals for the combat tracker is that it feels quick and easy to use, so I spent some time adding keyboard shortcuts for the things you update most during combat. Press ? to see them all. A few highlights:

  • N and P for the next and previous turn
  • H to jump to the HP amount, then Enter to damage or Shift+Enter to heal
  • R to open the dice roller
  • A to add a creature

Smaller things

  • The dice roller shows each die you rolled, with max rolls in green and 1s in red.
  • Fix: the app could sometimes load as a blank page.
  • Fix: the home page now fits on phone screens.

As always, if you run into a bug or have an idea, let me know on Discord!

Happy Brewing! 🍻
