Premium and item sync

Hey all.

I've got some exciting news. After lots of work and decision making, I'm ready to present the next big update for Monsterbrew.

Items can finally be synced across devices, just like creatures, and a guide on item pricing has been added as well. Monsterbrew also has a paid plan now. I'll start with that one, since I want to be upfront about it.

Premium

What started as a hobby project for myself has grown into something lots of people use, and I couldn't be happier about it. I'm genuinely grateful for that!

However, as more and more people use Monsterbrew, keeping it online and syncing libraries comes with a cost. That's why I've created a Premium plan to help cover that, so this project can keep running.

With Premium, every creature and item backs up and syncs on its own, with no slot limit. Any new creature or item you create is synced automatically too.

All the core features of Monsterbrew stay free: the editor, your library and every export. I'm a big advocate of 'paying for convenience', so that's what I'm going for. Premium will only ever be for convenience, and a way to support the project if you want to.

Your data

With Premium, your whole library syncs, so your creatures and items live on our servers as well as in your browser. If that makes you a little uneasy, I totally get it. The terms and privacy policy spell out exactly what happens with your data, but here's the short version:

  • Your creatures, items and account details are yours, now and always. I don't look through them, and I'll never sell them. They're only stored so your library can follow you from device to device.

Items sync too

Next up, we also have item syncing! Magic items now sync across devices, just like creatures. There is a sync switch right in the editor now, so you don't have to go looking for it.

The item editor now also auto-saves, the same way the creature editor does.

What is it worth?

I've created a small item price guide with the official 2024 numbers: what each rarity is worth, what it costs to craft, and what a spell scroll sells for at every spell level. It also covers why rarity is only a starting point, and points to two community pricing systems worth a look.

Pick a rarity and Monsterbrew suggests a value you can apply in one click.

Smaller things

  • Item collection PDFs can now be exported in black and white, for B/W printers.
  • The home page got a redesign, with a live stat block demo and SRD search.
  • Buttons and actions now line up between the creature and item pages.

What the future brings

With Premium out the door, I can focus more of my time on building features for Monsterbrew again. I've gotten a lot of exciting suggestions, and some of them are already in the planning phase!

The features I'm working on next, coming in the near future:

  • Sharing and publishing creatures and items
  • A public library
  • An encounter builder
  • A spell creator, with linking to creatures and items

Phew, I think that's everything I wanted to talk about. Again, I'm grateful for your support, and thank you for using Monsterbrew. If you have any questions, suggestions or just want to talk, I'm always available on Discord!

Happy Brewing all! 🍻
